Delhi police felicitates 450 women trained in self-defence techniques in collaboration World Vision India on International Women’s Day

NewsPatrolling.com : MARCH 8, 2018, New Delhi:  The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Time is now: rural and urban activists transforming women’s lives”. Over the years, women have faced exploitation, harassment, discrimination and lack of equal opportunities. Many of their rights have been secured after sustained efforts to overcome these odds. Today women have made significant contributions in all spheres of life. Yet, they are still under-represented in the public sphere and many of them continue to suffer discrimination and violence. Equal access to education, health care, employment opportunities and representation in political and economic decision-making processes will ensure transformation in the lives of women.

In an endeavor towards creating a safe city for women, Delhi Police has collaborated with World Vision India, to train around 450 women in the art of self-defense. Today, on International Women’s Day, a valedictory ceremony was conducted for these women who have successfully completed 15 days of training. World Vision India’s My City Initiative’ aims to make cities safer, especially for women. As part of this programme, representatives of the organisation are also part of Delhi Police’s women's safety committees across the city. So far with the support of the Delhi Police, self-defense training has been conducted for more than 3000 women in the city.

Speaking at the valedictory, Mr. Sushil Kumar, DCP, Ashok Vihar, North West Delhi said, “Women are an asset to the nation. We need to join hands to make Women empowerment possible and spread the message in our society. Join hands with the Delhi police in preventing Violence against women.” Joining him at the occasion were Mr. Anil Malik, SHO, Adarsh Nagar; Ms. Kamal, Inspector, Delhi Police (Parivartan Wing) and Ms. Susheela, Sub Inspector Delhi Police (Parivartan Wing).

Shenaz Khan, one of the women leaders of the community who received recognition today at the event for her contribution towards empowering women shared, “It is high time women realise that we need to help ourselves to achieve success and not wait for others to come rescue us. We need to act; practicing what you learn will not only lead to women empowerment but will also contribute in multiplying the effect of Women empowerment.”

Reiterating the need to #PressforProgress, Cherian Thomas, CEO World Vision India says, “We believe that integrating gender into our programs transforms individuals, systems and structures towards gender justice for a more equitable world which promotes dignity and wellbeing of every man, woman and child. Through our initiatives, we seek to empower and equip girls and women to become active participants in the development of their communities’.
